Tammy,
Thanks for sharing this story!
If you don't mind, can I repost it in the <a href="http://www.tollidee.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=7&sid=e15a0a2fb166fb864888d03c49a1ba23 rel="nofollow">forums</a>? Better yet, you could give us the "full" version yourself in the <a href="http://www.tollidee.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=7&sid=e15a0a2fb166fb864888d03c49a1ba23 rel="nofollow">forums</a> if you'd like.
I think it is important for people to see this kind of proactive care going on.

Too many people complain and pick on the negatives associated with healthcare in this country, it's great to see such a positive story.

You gave a wonderful gift - Thank You!

My mother and I live in Kentucky and when we knew it was getting close to her needing a kidney transplant we began
the process to see if I was a match for her. The first hopital we went to said that there was an antibody of mine
that she was reacting to and would not be able to do the transplant. I think it was the worst day of my life. I felt I was her only hope. I went home and starting searching the internet and found out about the program at Johns Hopkins and immediatley contacted them. We had some
blood drawn here in Kentucky and sent it to them. They set us up an appointment a couple of months later and told us they felt that my mother was not reacting to an antibody and she would not require the plasmapheresis before the transplant. We proceeded with the transplant and about a week or so after the transplant my mother started showing signs of rejection. They did the plasmapheresis at that time and it worked. I feel that if we had not been at Johns Hopkins that my mother would have lost the kidney. I am so thankful for Dr. Mongomery, Dr. Cooper, Dr. Jarrett and all of their staff. They truly care about their patients. I think more people should know that this great program is available.

The problem my friend is convincing America to recycle rather than throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles a day. Once we do that I'm ok with any bottled water.

Hi Jonathan.

Thanks for your kind words. I apologize for posting in your comments but I am having trouble getting logged onto the forum.

Have you seen this?

'Domino' Transplant Program Makes Best Use of Altruistic Donated Kidneys

"Under the terms of the domino-paired donation program, a kidney transplant patient who has a willing but incompatible living organ donor is matched with an altruistic, compatible donor. The incompatible kidney from the recipient‘s intended donor is then domino-matched with the next compatible patient on the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) waiting list. This strategy can be further used to enable a triple transplant by simply adding an additional incompatible donor-recipient pair to the chain."

Check out the rest of the article at http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/522292/

Now why didn't I think of that? I just LOVE these guys at Hopkins.

Looking forward to your comments.

Julie

P.S. I am going for my 2 year post-transplant check up in September. I can hardly wait to show off!

Hi jonathan,

Just found your blog in a rather unglamorous round about way. I can't help myself, I have to respond. I, too, saw this article via Google Alert the other day. I don't know exactly what they are doing Down Under but why isn't there more coverage of what is being done here at home? I am an (so far successful, keep your fingers crossed please) Incompatible Kidney Transplant. It was done 22 months ago at Johns Hopkins after 4 other transplant enters on both sides of the country had pretty much written me off. I had 100% PRA, O+ blood type and an A donor. Tough combo. I did have plasmapheresis as well as infusion therapy and lots of other lovely procedures and adventures. I just had labs done yesterday. Creatnine is solid at 1.3, BP 120/70, Cholesterol is so close to normal I may get to drink 2% milk soon, and they even lowered my rapa another gram. I guess my point is I am walking proof that it can work. Of course, the $100 million question is . . . for how long. Check it out: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Transplant/Programs/InKTP/videos.html

Best,
